Karl Stittgen Modernist Yellow Gold and Malachite Suite Circa 1970

About the Item

A collectible 18-karat yellow gold and malachite suite comprised of a pair of earrings and a necklace by the important Canadian modernist jewelry artist, Karl Stittgen. The earrings and necklace are stamped 18K, Stittgen, maker's mark. The necklace is 15" long, with a weight of 71.68 grams. The malachite drop measures: 2.22" x 1.45" x 0.18". The earrings are 2.5" x 0.71" x 0.35", with a weight of 34.30 grams. They are clip ons. This unique, architectural set, a fine metalwork play on the dimensions and beauty of the square, with a single accommodation - in the earrings - for a rectangular shape - is in excellent condition. The necklace, is a harmonious design and sits comfortably on the body. In his lifetime, Karl Stittgen was honored for his "profound and lasting impact on applied art and design"; he was a jeweler and also a watchmaker; later in life he became an architectural designer and even later, a ceramicist. His design sensibility was wholly original as well as wide-ranging and his best work is highly collectible. He created brilliant jewels consisting of a mix of finely polished metalwork and geometrically cut gemstones, and others comprised of molten, textured surfaces with embedded imperfect gemstones. Some of his jewels are highly architectural - as seen in his single-stone rings and the suite above - while others are made in an organic style, very much drawn from the natural environment he loved so much. Stittgen arrived in Vancouver from Germany in 1952 and established himself quite quickly, as a critical player in the very active artistic scene in the city. Eventually, he became highly successful as a master jeweler and opened stores in Calgary, San Francisco, and New York. He went on to train several Canadian master goldsmiths. Stittgen will be remembered as a man for all seasons in the history of modern Canadian jewelry. Purchasing this set by Stittgen engages the collector in an important strand of the modernist story.
